PRECISION WITHOUT THE PRICE TAG.
For decades, the SPR has grown
from a rifle configuration with an incredibly niche application to one of the
most desirable platforms on the market. Historically, mid-range precision rifles
that fill its niche have been “aspirational” guns that shooters scrimp and save
to afford. With the J.O.E.® L, we wanted to change that and complicate
the math on how affordable this highly valuable capability can be.
UPPER RECEIVER
The beating heart of your rifle
is the upper receiver. For detailed info on our M4 receiver, click here.
The J.O.E.® L began with the
development of our SPR-E barrel. In the tradition of the Mk12 program, standard
equipment includes an 18” 416R stainless steel barrel with a few tasteful
modernizations. The profile of the SPR-E barrel is a long, tapered contour
behind the gas block that bleeds into a front journal that is compatible with
the beloved Allen Engineering OPS 12 collar system found on both the Mk12 Mod 0
and Mod 1. At the business end are beefed up 5/8x24 threads. The purpose of
these changes is to smooth out the profile of the barrel across its whole
length to improve barrel harmonics by reducing the frequency and severity of steps.
The larger muzzle threads also reduce the risk of accuracy killing bore
constriction resulting from torqueing on a suppressor host. Another major improvement
over the traditional Mk12 barrels is in the gas tuning. Historically, these
rifles have a large 0.100” gas port. With the increasing ubiquity of
suppressors, especially on SPR-style rifles, we decided to tune the barrel with
a much more conservative 0.093” port. The result is a pleasant, smooth 50/50
tuning out of the box that is just as happy with a can as it is without.
With affordability in mind, it ships
standard with our new J.O.E.® Bolt Carrier Group (BCG). It features the same
quality materials and components as our M4P™ BCG but features the MIL-STD
Manganese Phosphate exterior coating and Hard-Chrome lining in the bolt run and
gas key bore. It still starts with a full-mass, heat-treated 8620 carrier with
a MIL-spec 4130 gas key that is sealed with high-temp gasket compound and
secured in place with staked Grade-8 OCKS fasteners from Michiguns. The bolt
head is machined from time-honored, MIL-spec Carpenter No. 158 alloy, precision
ground, and High-Pressure Tested (HP) and Magnetic Particle Inspected (MP).
Each bolt head is also individually marked with a unique QC number that ties it
to the barrel with which it is paired. The cold-drawn, 4130 extractor is
shot-peened for durability and comes standard with a Sprinco® XP-5 5-coil spring.
Likewise, the S7 tool steel ejector is driven by a Sprinco® enhanced ejector
spring. These springs are cryogenically relieved and Moly-coated for a stupendously
long service life of 25,000 rounds or more. In other words, this set of springs
will outlast any of the other wear components within the assembly. Lastly, the
firing pin is machined from 8740 alloy, shot-peened for durability, and
chrome-plated for corrosion resistance.
Rounding out the upper receiver
is a modular, free-floating ASAL rail with a continuous 1913 Picatinny top rail
and 5 full-length sections of M-LOK® rail for all your attachment needs. The
taper interface of these rails does an excellent job at keeping everything
locked up and in-line for reliable zero retention with back-up iron sights and
laser aiming devices. The rifle also includes a pre-installed 7-slot 1913 rail
section for mounting a bipod.
LOWER RECEIVER
In the bottom half of the
assembly is a high-quality Mil-Spec forged lower receiver. On the outside is a
GI-style 90-degree ambidextrous selector that delivers smooth, positive
engagement and maintains reliable option in the “FIRE” position and predictable
safety in the “SAFE” position. The J.O.E.® comes standard with an A2 pistol
grip and 6-position M4 stock. While these are not the highest speed pieces of
furniture available, they are more than serviceable and give you, the end-user,
plenty of room in the budget to experiment with different grips and stocks to
find your ideal combination.
Setting things off on the inside
is a USGI fire control group. Using full-power springs for consistent primer
detonation and standard geometry, you’ll feel right at home giving it a
squeeze. Much like the furniture, the FCG is an easily configurable and highly
subjective component. The USGI FCG has been getting the job done for over 60
years, but you can certainly substitute it out for any upgrade of your choice.
On the back end is a MIL-Spec
impact extruded 7075-T6 Aluminum 6-position carbine receiver extension with an
internal dry film lube applique. The extension is torqued down to TDP-spec 40
lbs-ft and secured in place with a double-staked QD endplate. Inside the buffer
tube is an H1 buffer assembly paired with an enhanced power Sprinco® Blue buffer
spring. These work in tandem with the rifle-length gas system to deliver a
smoother recoil impulse and more reliable feeding from the magazine when
compared to typical carbine weights, springs, and gas systems.
The whole rifle comes in a flat
black MIL-Spec Type III Hard Coat Anodizing.
WARRANTY
As with all our firearms, every
component is inspected and assembled by procedure before the complete firearm
is test fired with live ammunition. It is our guarantee that they walk as well
as they talk. So, should you encounter any issues arising from component
selection or assembly error, we will fix it under the provisions of our FYS
Limited Lifetime Guarantee. The upper receiver, barrel, and bolt head are
all individually engraved with matching numbers noted on a certificate of
authenticity that ships with your rifle for QC during the assembly process and
down the line should you need work done on your rifle.
