IN FORMATION.
The CRANE™ S Mk2 is the general purpose variant of our duty-grade collection. Featuring modern controls, a durable chrome-lined barrel from Criterion barrels in Germantown, WI that does not compromise on accuracy, and a plethora of options that allow you to configure it however you want out of the box, it delivers duty-grade durability without the trappings of bureaucratic convention.
Available with a pinned and welded 13.9 or 14.5" barrel.
UPPER RECEIVER.
Every one of our rifles is assembled by one set of hands from start to finish to our exacting quality standards with 100% domestically produced components.
The beating heart of your rifle, the upper receiver, is built around a forged 7075-T6 thermal fit receiver. With a slightly undersized barrel seat, the receiver must be heated to fit the barrel. While it is common for boutique rifles to feature shims, sealant compounds, and other solutions, this mechanical fit is the tightest and most consistent seat you can get in an upper assembly. This tight seal ensures that you are able to wring every ounce of mechanical accuracy and shot consistency out of the rifle. We also take care not to achieve this seat by hammering the upper onto the barrel with the muzzle sunk into the work bench. Instead, we use a little heat to fit the barrel into the upper without the potential for crown deformation or bore deflection. The inside of the upper receiver is coated with Cerakote® Micro Slick Dry Film Lube, which will not wear off like standard spray-on DFL appliques. Paired with the same coating on the charging handle body and inside the buffer tube, it helps retain lubricity in the action in the absence of lubrication and reduce friction caused by carbon fouling.
Slinging lead down range from the CRANE™ S Mk2 is your choice of Criterion barrel. You can choose a barrel length of 13.9 or 14.5" in either their Hybrid or CORE profiles. Both profiles feature Criterion's industry-leading chrome lining process that incurs the benefits of longer durability and reduced carbon fouling in the bore without the degradation in accuracy commonly associated with the chrome-lined barrels. The 6-groove rifling is honed and hand-lapped for perfect bore uniformity and the chamber is polished in addition to the feed ramps to assist in extraction and feeding. All barrel variants have a .223 Wylde chamber with a 1:8 twist rate for excellent accuracy with a wide range of .223 Remington OR 5.56 NATO loads. The low-profile gas block is aligned with a dimple on the bottom side of the gas journal, cross-drilled, and pinned in place with a hardened taper pin. This method retains perfect alignment between the gas block and the barrel's gas port at all times and allows for perfect return to alignment even after complete disassembly. Lastly, each barrel is individually marked with a quality control number matched to the upper receiver and bolt head so you can rest assured that they are individually checked for head space and paired throughout the entire assembly and testing process. The gas ports for all barrel options are properly tuned for shooting with or without a suppressor. However, you can still choose to have a BRT EZ-Tune gas tube installed for dedicated suppressor usage. On the business end of the barrel is either an A2 flash hider that is timed with a crush washer or your choice of suppressor host that is torqued between 20 and 30 lbs-ft and installed with Rocksett™ ceramic adhesive to hold it in place while preventing accuracy depleting bore constriction at the muzzle.
The CRANE™ S Mk2 comes standard with our hard-chrome plated M4P Bolt Carrier Group (BCG). It starts with a full-mass carrier turned from 8620 steel with a mil-spec 4130 gas key that is sealed with high-temp gasket compound and secured in place with staked Grade-8 fasteners. The bolt head is machined from the time-honored Carpenter No. 158 alloy, precision ground, and HPT/MPI with a deep “MP” marking and QC number that is noted on your Certificate of Authenticity to pair with the barrel in the assembly. The extractor is made to mil-spec from cold-drawn 4130 alloy, shot-peened for durability, and features a 5-coil Sprinco® XP-5 enhanced spring with a stupendously long service life of 25,000 rounds or more. Likewise, the S7 alloy ejector is driven by Sprinco’s enhanced ejector spring. Lastly, the firing pin is machined from mil-spec 8740 alloy and shot-peened like the extractor for durability. The shining feature of this BCG is that every component in the assembly is finished in a durable hard-chrome plating that is a breeze to clean and maintains an exceptional base level of lubricity to keep your rifle running even when lubrication burns into scarcity. For charging duty, you’ll find an ambidextrous Radian Raptor® charging handle with latches big enough for positive engagement but not so big as to snag on body-worn gear.
Rounding out the upper receiver is your choice of modular, free-floating rail. The Centurion Arms C4 quad rails are a tried and true 2-piece rail system that provides ample rigidity and space for forward mounted lights, lasers, and grips and comes with a set of Santoprene ERGO 18-slot rail ladders that can be trimmed to fit around your accessories. The CRANE™ Wedge Lock rail features a rigid mounting system designed by Hodge Defense, integral steel sling QD cups, 7-sides of modern M-LOK® attachment slots, and comes with a set of nine Magpul® Type 2 rail covers for added traction and heat insulation. While there is no substitute for additional material when it comes to rigidity, the Wedge Lock rail will still retain a reliable zero with laser aiming devices even after bumps or impacts.
LOWER RECEIVER
Moving to the bottom half of the assembly, you’ll find our billet 7075-T6 aluminum receiver with an integral right-side bolt release for quick bolt-lock reloads and a flared trigger guard for added clearance when shooting with gloves. On the outside is a GI-style 90-degree ambidextrous selector that delivers smooth, positive engagement and maintains reliable option in the “FIRE” position and predictable safety in the “SAFE” position. To maximize your ergonomic comfort out of the box, you have the independent choice of a Magpul® MOE-K2®, B5 P23 (with B5's grip plug), or BCM® GUNFIGHTER™ Mod 1 pistol grip paired with a Magpul® DT, B5 Bravo, or BCM® GUNFIGHTER™ SOPMOD Mod 0 stock. With the option of an ambidextrous magazine release, this suite of controls is a great improvement for right- and left-handed shooters alike.
On the inside is our Two-Stage Match trigger that delivers consistent trigger pulls and features full-power springs for reliable primer detonation. With hand-polished interfacing surfaces throughout, it gives the shooter a smooth 2-lbs take-up that meets a well-defined wall with a crisp 2.5-lbs break that gives you an enjoyable trigger pull without compromising on reliable function. Also available for a premium are a wide selection of Geissele® triggers should your trigger finger be finely tuned to one of those already.
Moving back the recoil assembly is a 9-position intermediate “A5” buffer system. The receiver extension is impact extruded from mil-spec 7075-T6 aluminum and has 9 adjustable positions for fine-tuning your length of pull compared to the standard 6 positions common to most standard systems. The extension is torqued down to TDP-spec 40 lbs-ft and locked in place with a double-staked billet steel QD endplate. Inside the buffer tube is an A5H1 buffer body with a Sprinco® Green spring. This system may give the shooter the perception of a “smoother” recoil impulse, but the main boon is an optimized travel time for the BCG to give the magazine enough time to present the next round in the stack for reliable feeding. The receiver extension is coated inside and out with Cerakote® Micro Slick Dry Film Lubricant coating to prevent binding in the spring and repel moisture.
The exterior of the firearm comes in your choice from our selection of in-house Cerakote® H-Series finishes.
WARRANTY
As with all our firearms, every component is inspected and assembled by procedure before the complete firearm is test fired with live ammunition. It is our guarantee that they walk as well as they talk. So, should you encounter any issues arising from component selection or assembly error, we will fix it under the provisions of our FYS Limited Lifetime Guarantee. The upper receiver, barrel, and bolt head are all individually engraved with matching numbers noted on a certificate of authenticity that ships with your rifle for QC during the assembly process and down the line should you need work done on your rifle.
