BILL, GEORGE, AND JACK ARE DIME-A-DOZEN. THERE IS ONLY ONE
JOE.
The J.O.E.® Carbine Mk3
is the result of refinement and reprioritization of what it means to be “high
value.” For most companies, this phrase is defined by scalability, volume, and
the almighty margin: the input. For Munitionworks, it is measured by what our
customer receives out-of-the-box: the output. To that end, the J.O.E.® Carbine
was meticulously analyzed piece-by-piece to ensure that the final product is
truly the most affordable, yet dependable, rifle we can put together. With
these changes, the original vision of the J.O.E.® remains intact: an affordable
proposition with room to tinker, configure, and outfit without compromising the
dependable, accurate, and durable rifle at its core.
UPPER RECEIVER
The beating heart of your rifle
is the upper receiver. For detailed info on our M4 receiver, click here.
New for the Mk3, the lead is
slung through our own 16” chrome-lined, “JOECOM” profile barrel. Like previous
models, this barrel is turned from quality 4150CMV blanks per MIL-B-11995-E.
Compared to a standard “Government” profile, there is more material added
behind the gas block journal to improve rigidity, heat dispersion, and balance.
The chrome-lining drastically improves barrel life by adding a harder
protective layer over the base steel. Not only is the chrome-lining harder, but
it is also more resistant to erosion on account of heat both acutely in longer
strings of fire and gradually over time.
With consideration of the needs
of the modern shooter, the 0.076” gas port is also much more appropriate for
mixed usage with a suppressor than the more common 0.080-0.082” size found on
many market offerings. While it seems like a minute change, this more
conservative gas port significantly reduces issues arising from the increased
back pressure incurred by using a suppressor like hastened component wear and
the dreaded double-feed. As with previous models, the low-profile gas block is
timed to the barrel with two dimples drilled into the barrel and secured by
cross-drilling and pinning the assembly together with a high-strength taper
pin. Capping off the barrel assembly is your choice of muzzle device: either a tried-and-true
A2 flash hider or your selected suppressor host.
With affordability in mind, the
Mk3 ships standard with our new J.O.E.® Bolt Carrier Group (BCG). It features
the same quality materials and components as our M4P™ BCG but features the MIL-STD
Manganese Phosphate exterior coating and Hard-Chrome lining in the bolt run and
gas key bore. It still starts with a full-mass, heat-treated 8620 carrier with
a MIL-spec 4130 gas key that is sealed with high-temp gasket compound and
secured in place with staked Grade-8 OCKS fasteners from Michiguns. The bolt
head is machined from time-honored, MIL-spec Carpenter No. 158 alloy, precision
ground, and High-Pressure Tested (HP) and Magnetic Particle Inspected (MP).
Each bolt head is also individually marked with a unique QC number that ties it
to the barrel with which it is paired. The cold-drawn, 4130 extractor is
shot-peened for durability and comes standard with a Sprinco® XP-5 5-coil spring.
Likewise, the S7 tool steel ejector is driven by a Sprinco® enhanced ejector
spring. These springs are cryogenically relieved and Moly-coated for a stupendously
long service life of 25,000 rounds or more. In other words, this set of springs
will outlast any of the other wear components within the assembly. Lastly, the
firing pin is machined from 8740 alloy, shot-peened for durability, and
chrome-plated for corrosion resistance.
Rounding out the upper receiver
is a modular, free-floating ASAL rail with a continuous 1913 Picatinny top rail
and 5 full-length sections of M-LOK® rail for all your attachment needs. The
taper interface of these rails does an excellent job at keeping everything
locked up and in-line for reliable zero retention with back-up iron sights and
laser aiming devices.
LOWER RECEIVER
In the bottom half of the
assembly is a high-quality Mil-Spec forged lower receiver. On the outside is a
GI-style 90-degree ambidextrous selector that delivers smooth, positive
engagement and maintains reliable option in the “FIRE” position and predictable
safety in the “SAFE” position. The J.O.E.® comes standard with an A2 pistol
grip and 6-position M4 stock. While these are not the highest speed pieces of
furniture available, they are more than serviceable and give you, the end-user,
plenty of room in the budget to experiment with different grips and stocks to
find your ideal combination.
Setting things off on the inside
is a USGI fire control group. Using full-power springs for consistent primer
detonation and standard geometry, you’ll feel right at home giving it a
squeeze. Much like the furniture, the FCG is an easily configurable and highly
subjective component. The USGI FCG has been getting the job done for over 60
years, but you can certainly substitute it out for any upgrade of your choice.
On the back end is a MIL-Spec
impact extruded 7075-T6 Aluminum 6-position carbine receiver extension with an
internal dry film lube applique. The extension is torqued down to TDP-spec 40
lbs-ft and secured in place with a double-staked endplate. Inside the buffer
tube is an H1 buffer assembly paired with an enhanced power Sprinco® Blue buffer
spring. These work in tandem with the mid-length gas system to deliver a
smoother recoil impulse and more reliable feeding from the magazine when
compared to typical carbine weights, springs, and gas systems.
The whole rifle comes in a flat
black MIL-Spec Type III Hard Coat Anodizing.
WARRANTY
As with all our firearms, every
component is inspected and assembled by procedure before the complete firearm
is test fired with live ammunition. It is our guarantee that they walk as well
as they talk. So, should you encounter any issues arising from component
selection or assembly error, we will fix it under the provisions of our FYS
Limited Lifetime Guarantee. The upper receiver, barrel, and bolt head are
all individually engraved with matching numbers noted on a certificate of
authenticity that ships with your rifle for QC during the assembly process and
down the line should you need work done on your rifle.
