J.O.E.® K SBR

Loved by many, the J.O.E.® Carbine has been the bulwark of the entry-level section of our catalogue for over 6 years. While it has seen minor changes in that time, we went back to the drawing board to refine what constitutes our high-value carbine to reflect Munitionworks today. The end result is not simply another rack-grade black rifle. Instead, the J.O.E.® is the most affordable version of the best rifle we have ever made.

UPPER RECEIVER

The ethos for development for the J.O.E.® has always been rather simple: a dependable core rifle with room for customization of the bolt-on parts by the end-user. In keeping with that guiding principle, the upper receiver assembly of the J.O.E.® now features a complete suite of our new in-house components that are shared with our top-end offering in the CRANE™.

The assembly starts with our new M4P™ upper receiver. Machined from high-quality 7075-T6 forgings, it is held to tight tolerances with key variances from the standard MIL-spec print to improve performance and feel. First, the internal bore of the barrel seat is reduced for a thermal fit with the barrel extension. This does not magically improve accuracy. Rather, it improves the consistency of the mean center of your groups. What this means for you is that it is capable of both printing nice and tight 5-shot groups as well as stacking a full 30-round magazine of factory match loads within the bounds of a sticky note. Second, the receiver lugs are widened and the bottom deck lowered to improve fitment with the lower receiver. Although the wobble does not inherently affect mechanical accuracy of the weapon system, it almost certainly has an effect on the shooter's feel. With these minor changes, the receiver set is tight without the use of any kind of auxiliary tensioning device like a screw or wedge. As the cherry on top, the internal bore of the receiver is coated with our Duragray DFL coating that ensures the action runs smooth even when it is dry or dirty.

Next up is the new M4P™ barrel. On the surface, it is a 4150 CMV chrome-lined, phosphate finished barrel with a modern tapered contour and a conservative 0.065" gas port. On the inside, the honed bore features dual-patented Single Edge Polygonal Rifling (SEPR), which dramatically reduces the deformation of the jacket of the projectile as it travels down the bore. This technology enables us to retain both the enhanced durability of a chrome-lined chamber and bore as well as a high level of accuracy that is unmatched by other rifles in this class. With the level of precision required for the chrome-lining process, that also means that the barrel extension is installed after the finish processing. As such, it features a durable NP3® coating that combines sub-micron particles of PTFE with Electroless Nickel for smooth cycling of the action. As an added bonus, NP3® is proven to not flake and degrade over time like the cheaper Nickel Boron coating commonly found on "premium" components in the industry. For the gas assembly, the barrel is dual dimpled for timing and then cross-drilled with the gas block to be locked in place with a low-profile taper pin. The J.O.E.® comes standard with a Nitride-treated stainless steel gas tube for prolonged service life and superior corrosion resistance. The conservative 0.065" gas port is a sound 50/50 tuning with full-pressure loads for reliable performance with or without a suppressor.

The J.O.E.® now also comes standard with our hard-chrome M4P™ BCG.  The bolt head is machined from tried and true MIL-spec Carpenter No. 158 alloy and high-pressure tested (HPT) and magnetic particle inspected (MPI) to ensure that it is free of imperfections that would lead to premature failure. The ejector and extractor are both fitted with Sprinco® enhanced springs that will last for tens of thousands of cycles. On top of the carrier assembly, the 4130 gas key is sealed with Permatex® aviation gasket compound per MIL-spec and secured with Grade-8 OCKS fasteners that are deeply staked. Lastly, the cam pin is engraved with a directional marking for repeatable installation orientation after service, which can extend the life of the part significantly.

Finally, the J.O.E.® now features our M4P™ M-LOK® rail system. It is designed from the ground up to be rigid and durable without the baggage of a complex and heavy clamping mechanism. Instead, the M4P­™ rail relies on a timed steel barrel nut and 8 countersunk fasteners that have three-way security with torque, taper, and thread locker. The full-length rail features 7-sided M-LOK® mounting interfaces and a scalloped top 1913 rail for tucking cables for lights and lasers. Lastly, the M4P™ rail has thicker 0.100" side walls when compared to the industry standard 0.080" to improve rigidity.

LOWER RECEIVER

In the bottom half of the assembly is a high-quality MIL-Spec forged lower receiver. It has tighter receiver lug pockets that pair with the widened lugs on the upper receiver for a wobble-free fit without the use of any kind of tensioning device. On the outside is a GI-style 90-degree ambidextrous selector that delivers smooth, positive engagement and maintains reliable option in the “FIRE” position and predictable safety in the “SAFE” position. The J.O.E.® comes standard with an A2 pistol grip and 6-position M4 stock with integrated QD sling swivels.

Setting things off on the inside is a USGI fire control group. Using full-power springs for consistent primer detonation and standard geometry, you’ll feel right at home giving it a squeeze. Much like the furniture, the FCG is an easily configurable and highly subjective component. The USGI FCG has been getting the job done for over 60 years, but you can certainly substitute it out for any upgrade of your choice.

On the back end is a MIL-Spec impact extruded 7075-T6 Aluminum 9-position intermediate receiver extension with our Duragray DFL coating inside and out. The extension is torqued down to TDP-spec 40 lbs-ft and secured in place with a double-staked QD endplate. Inside the buffer tube is an A5H1 buffer assembly paired with a stout enhanced power rifle buffer spring to power through grit and grime. These work in tandem with the mid-length gas system to deliver a smoother recoil impulse and more reliable feeding from the magazine when compared to typical carbine weights, springs, and gas systems.

The whole rifle comes in a flat black MIL-Spec Type III Hard Coat Anodizing.

WARRANTY

As with all our firearms, every component is inspected and assembled by procedure before the complete firearm is test fired with live ammunition. It is our guarantee that they walk as well as they talk. So, should you encounter any issues arising from component selection or assembly error, we will fix it under the provisions of our FYS Limited Lifetime Guarantee. The upper receiver, barrel, and bolt head are all individually engraved with matching numbers noted on a certificate of authenticity that ships with your rifle for QC during the assembly process and down the line should you need work done on your rifle.
